Macgregor 19 towing question?

I have a 2009 Subaru forrester rated to tow 2400 lbs and a 200 lbs max tongue weight. Would my Subaru be adequate to tow a macgregor 19?|||a Macgregor 19 (powersailer) weights 1630lbs boat and trailer. this leaves you with 770lbs left for motor, gas and other gear but with planning you should be able to remain under your towing max weight.

since you have 4 wheel drive you should have adequate traction for launching and retrieving your sailboat.

make sure that your subaru is equipped with a transmission cooler and even an oil cooler will help to make it a better tow rig.

your subaru should do ok, but you may want to move up to a larger tow vehicle if you plan to tow longer distances.

hope this helps|||I believe you can tow your boat but you are probably at the maximum and you will know there is a load behind you. An automatic needs a trans cooler and a standard should have a heavy duty clutch, trailer brakes are also a very good idea. If your vehicle feels as tho it is really working too hard you will shorten its' life by towing a lot regularly. If you can go to a website to get the weight of your boat and then include fuel, gear, trailer weight etc., you may know right away if you will exceed the tow rating. Hope this helps.|||It should be ok for short distances, but for long hauls or hilly terrain, you would need a larger vehicle.

Be careful with that choice of boat. It will be ok for short sailing trips in fair weather. Macgregor tried to design a sailboat that would appeal to powerboaters but ended up with something that does neither very well. It has mixed reviews. The sale prices are low for a reason.

There are many beautiful, capable trailerable sailboats. West Wight Potter makes a 19 footer that is superb, the only problem is they are difficult to find for sale as the owners tend to keep them forever. A Seaward Fox may be even harder to find.

Consider a Com-Pac 19, Sandpiper 565, Edel 540 or the Wegu 18 as great trailerable sailorboats.|||You start by taking the whole rig to a public SCALE and getting the ACTUAL SCALE WEIGHT.. and then look at the placard on the driver's side door and see what the GVRW (Gross vehicle Weight) is.. and you will know how much room you have to play with for weight. Weigh it with a full tank of gas and nothing else in the car and empty water and/fuel tanks on the boat.
